The U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) is laying the groundwork for implementing an integrated nuclear waste management system that includes preparing for future large-scale transport of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level radioactive waste (HLW). A significant destination-independent component of this integrated system is a rail transport capability for SNF and HLW. The attached presentation and paper provide an overview of the current DOE-NE effort related to designing and fabricating prototype railcars. The presentation was given at the Waste Management Symposia on March 9, 2017.
